Flux Pumping and Magnetic Fields in the Outer Penumbra of a Sunspot

چکیده
The filamentary structure of a sunspot penumbra is believed to be magnetoconvective in origin. In the outer penumbra there is a difference in inclination of up to 30 Y40 between the magnetic fields associated with bright and dark filaments, and the latter fields plunge downward below the surface toward the edge of the spot.We have proposed that these fields are dragged downward bymagnetic pumping caused by the external granular convection. In this paper we model this process in a more elaborate idealized configuration that includes the curvature force exerted by an arched magnetic field in addition to magnetic buoyancy, and demonstrate that magnetic pumping remains an efficient mechanism for holding flux submerged. We discuss the implications of these results for the magnetic structure of the outer penumbra. Theoretical Models of Sunspot Structure and Dynamics
Recent progress in theoretical modeling of a sunspot is reviewed. The observed properties of umbral dots are well reproduced by realistic simulations of magnetoconvection in a vertical, monolithic magnetic field. To understand the penumbra, it is useful to distinguish between the inner penumbra, dominated by bright filaments containing slender dark cores, and the outer penumbra, made up of dark...
متن کاملThe Origin of Penumbral Structure in Sunspots: Downward Pumping of Magnetic Flux
This paper offers the first coherent picture of the interactions between convection and magnetic fields that lead to the formation of the complicated filamentary structure of a sunspot penumbra. Recent observations have revealed the intricate interlocking-comb structure of the penumbral magnetic field. Some field lines, with associated Evershed outflows, plunge below the solar surface near the ...
متن کاملDisintegration of Magnetic Flux in Decaying Sunspots as Observed with the Hinode SOT
Continuous observations of sunspot penumbrae with the Solar Optical Telescope aboard Hinode clearly show that the outer boundary of the penumbra fluctuates around its averaged position. The penumbral outer boundary moves inward when granules appear in the outer penumbra. We discover that such granules appear one after another while moving magnetic features (MMFs) are separating from the penumbr...
متن کاملFormation of Moving Magnetic Features and Penumbral Magnetic Fields with Hinode/SOT
Vector magnetic fields of moving magnetic features (MMFs) are well observed with the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) aboard the Hinode satellite. We focus on the evolution of three MMFs with the SOT in this study. We found that an MMF having relatively vertical fields with polarity same as the sunspot is detached from the penumbra around the granules appeared in the outer penumbra. This suggests ...
متن کاملEvolution of a Magnetic Flux Tube in a Sunspot Penumbra
The motion of an individual magnetic flux tube inside the penumbra of a sunspot is studied numerically. Here, we present preliminary results. The thin flux tube approximation together with a simplified radiative heat exchange with the surroundings is used to study the evolution of a flux tube embedded into a background given by a global magneto-static sunspot model. The investigation is underta...
